Did you know that you can clean your window air conditioner to help it work better and to keep your energy costs as low as possible? It’s true! Feel free to give us a call at Absolute Services if you would like to have a professional maintain your A/C unit, but if you’re up to tackling the easier stuff, here’s what you need to know when it comes to how to clean a window air conditioner. You can also learn how to clean an outdoor A/C unit here!

Straightening & Cleaning the Fins

First, you’ll want to clean the fins. You’ll need a fin comb, which you can usually pick up for about $10 at your local hardware store. Pop off the plastic covering on the outside of your unit or do whatever you need to do to access the internal parts of the air conditioner.

Use your fin comb to gently straighten fins and clean between them. You may want to wear gloves since these can be sharp and it’s easy to cut yourself. Spray the fins with foaming A/C cleaner after all the fins are straight.

How to Clean the AC Filter

While the foam cleaner is working, take out your filter. You may be able to purchase a new one and simply change them out. Other filters will require cleaning. Follow the directions in your air conditioner’s manual to make sure your filter is as clean as possible. All of the air for your space is being sucked in through this, so you want it as clear of debris as it can be.

Cleaning the Motor

Gently wipe the fan blades with a clean cloth and general-purpose grease cleaner. If it’s easy to access the internal parts of the motor, add a few drops of engine oil to help the fan spin better. Make sure you put all coverings back together again before you try to use the A/C unit.

Before you close everything up, wipe the cleaner off the fins, gently taking any dust and debris that it has bonded to with you. At this point, your air conditioner is clean and serviced, and ready to work for you all summer long.
